Between 19and 22 of June Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Belgrade office, European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity and Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) organised the first seminar of the 2014 Course for Promising Politicians. The event took place in Bečići, Montenegro, and focused on ideology and policies. FMS trainers Souad Haouli and Michiel Emmelkamp, Novo društvo (Croatia) trainer and SDP international secretary Karolina Leaković conducted the training.
Since 2003 the seminar has been organized three times annually and the course includes seminars on political ideology, media and communications skills and EU integration. The aim of the course is to introduce young promising politicians from South East Europe to the various aspects of political leadership, governance and the dynamics and structures of party policies. In addition, the organisers aim to create a network among young and politically active persons and to improve their knowledge on the political developments in the countries in the region.
Ich bin ein Social Democrat
After the welcome by the organisers, the seminar started with a ‘getting to know each other’ game which required from each of the participant to interview its neighbour and introduce him or her to the group. This was followed by a presentation on social democracy from a historical perspective and a debate on the relevance of political ideologies and ideas in nowadays politics.
Second part of the training focused on developing policies and programs from an ideological pint of view. Participants were divided in three groups: liberals, conservatives and social democrats and were assigned to develop policies for higher education and social security.
The third part of the seminar was already a short preview for the second seminar. Participants were assigned to develop a central message and communicate that message based on the policies they developed.
Finally, on the last day of the seminar, we welcomed guest speakers from Montenegro to discuss current political situation in the country. Daliborka Uljarević (Centre for Civil Education) and Mirko Stanić (spokesperson for the Social Democratic Party) openly discussed the challenges in Montenegro which led to a heated debate with the participants.
The second seminar of this course will take place in November in Tirana. The organisers are looking forward meeting the talented and enthusiastic participants in the Albanian capital.
