Extra editie Afrikadag op The Hague African Festival

Op zaterdag 29 juni verzorgt de Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) op het ‘The Hague African Festival' (THAF) een speciale extra, kleinere editie van de Afrikadag met als thema: ‘De Kracht van de Afrikaanse Diaspora’. De FMS organiseert als partner van het THAF een politiek-inhoudelijk programma in de stijl van de Afrikadag met een opening van Jan Pronk en verschillende debatten over politieke ontwikkelingen in Afrikaanse landen en Nederlandse ontwikkelingssamenwerking, waaronder een woordvoederdebat en een debat over Somalië.

Morsi: 'Our hands are extended'

On June 26 the Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi warned in a widely broadcasted speech that polarization was threatening the country’s democratic process. He also acknowledged he had made some ‘mistakes’, and offered opponents a say in amending the new constitution. The speech comes days before the planned massive demonstration on June 30, the day will mark a year since Morsi won the Presidential elections.

Judith Sargentini EU Fair Politician of the Year 2013

On 25 June MEP Judith Sargentini (Greens/EFA) has won the Fair Politician of the Year Award. The announcement was made during the official ceremony in the European Parliament, where several MEPs and others who were interested were gathered. Among all 754 MEPs, Sargentini put most efforts into making EU policies more fair towards developing countries.

Bram van Ojik Fair Politician 2013 Tweede Kamer

Bram van Ojik (GroenLinks) mag zich de Fair Politician of the Year 2012-2013 noemen. De Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS), de nieuwe stichting na fusering van Evert Vermeer Stichting en Alfred Mozer Stichting, reikte hem woensdag 26 juni in Nieuwspoort deze prijs uit. Van Ojik heeft zich het afgelopen jaar het meest van alle Kamerleden ingezet voor beleidscoherentie: eerlijk beleid ten opzichte van ontwikkelingslanden.

Lebanese army clashes with followers of radical Sunni clerk

On June 25, Lebanese security officials say a roadside bomb has exploded on the highway linking Beirut with Damascus. The bomb comes a day after heavy fighting between the army and militia’s of the radical Sunni clerk Ahmed al-Assir in the northern coastal town Sidon. Each side accuses the other of provoking the initial fighting. According to security forces 16 soldiers died in the fighting and at least 20 supporters of Assir were killed. Dozens are said to have been arrested. The fate of Assir is still unknown.

First Future Leaders Training held in the MENA region

Between June 7th and June 9th the European Forum, in cooperation with the Alfred Mozer Stichting, the UK Labour Party and the Al-Sindyan Institute organized for the first time a Future Leaders Training for 24 young and promising participants from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in Amman, Jordan. The participants came from social democratic and left progressive parties from Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan.
