Libya peace talks resume amid continued violence

U.N.-sponsored peace negotiations between Libya’s officially recognized government and the rival government were resumed on Thursday 4 June. Politicians and activists negotiated on forming a unity government to end the power struggle between the two rival governments both stressing to be the official government of the country. Mediators fear the power struggle may turn Libya into a failed state when both groups continue to battle for control.

Cooperation between Tunisia and EU intensified

On 27 May Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid met with EU Foreign Affairs chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels to discuss the intensification of the cooperation between both countries. The talks mainly focused on the Horizon 2020 research program which will be opened for Tunisia, the financial increase in bilateral cooperation, and on advancing on a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA).

Sfeerverslag bijeenkomst “Tunesië, de hoop in de regio?”

Op dinsdag 26 mei organiseerde de FMS in Den Haag een bijeenkomst over het democratiseringsproces en de politieke situatie in Tunesië. Het was een interessante en goed bezochte bijeenkomst. De hoofdgast van de avond was Mustapha Ben Jafar. Ben Jafar speelde een belangrijke rol in het Tunesië van na de revolutie. Als voorzitter van de Grondwetscommissie en tevens leider van de sociaaldemocratische partij Ettakatol, was hij nauw betrokken bij het schrijven van de nieuwe grondwet van Tunesië. Er is hoop en perspectief voor de democratie in Tunesië, maar internationale hulp is hierbij van groot belang zijn. “Ik wil Europa wakker schudden”, aldus Ben Jafar.

Muslim Brotherhood leader and 13 members to receive death sentence

On the 16th of March, Muslim Brotherhood leader, Mohammed Badie, and thirteen other members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been sentenced to death during a trial that is publicly known as the ‘’Raba Operations Room’’. Mohammed Badie and the other members were found guilty of planning attacks against the state. They were accused of setting up an ‘’operations room’’ to prepare attacks against the state following the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.
