Course for Promising Politicians: the EU inside out

Between the 16th and 19th of April 2015 the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) office in Belgrade , the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity and Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) organized the third and final seminar of the 2014 Course for Promising Politicians (CPP) in Zagreb, Croatia. The candidates of this program are young and promising social democratic politicians from the countries of former Yugoslavia and Albania.

String of murders keep Kyiv captivated

On 16 April 2015, two pro-Russian journalists were killed in Kyiv. Olex Buzyna, a pro-Russian journalist, was murdered in the yard of his house by two unidentified gunman. His death comes directly after another journalist, Sergey Sukhobok, was also killed. Both men played a role in the ‘’Anti-Maidan’’ movement, which opposed pro-European protests in 2014. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has voiced concern over the ongoing killing spree. The deaths are the latest in the string of murders that afflict Kyiv.

We invite you to a film-screening – “Blinibioscoop” - and debate on Putin’s influence on Russia’s neighbouring states. The FMS will organize this event in cooperation with COVOR.

During this afternoon the documentary ‘Vladimir Putin’s long shadow’, a 2015 CBC News-production, will be shown. The documentary tells the story of Putin’s rise to prominence. It shows Putin’s history, from a former KGB-agent to Russian President, and most notably his methods to achieve various goals. The documentary concludes with Putin’s role and involvement in Russia’s neighbouring countries.

Old nationalist causes new rifts between Serbia and Croatia

Yesterday the Croatian government has recalled his ambassador from Serbia for consultation after the war crimes suspect and leader of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), Vojislav Seselj, burned the Croatian flag at a meeting in Belgrade. Seselj has been in custody from 2003 – when he voluntarily surrendered to the International Criminal Court for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) – until November 2014 when he was provisionally released due to his deteriorating health condition. However, on 30 March 2015 ICTY ordered Seselj’s return to custody because he violated the release conditions by stating that he would not return to the Tribunal for the verdict in his war crimes trial.

Historische overwinning Buhari in Nigeriaanse verkiezingen

Muhammadu Buhari, leider van de All Progressive Congres partij (APC), heeft op dinsdagmiddag de overwinning geclaimd in de Nigeriaanse verkiezingen. Later die dag werd dit bevestigd door de Nigeriaanse verkiezingscommissie (INEC). De overwinning van Buhari op de huidige president Goodluck Jonathan (PDP) kan worden gezien als een historische uitslag.Voor het eerst sinds het einde van het militaire bewind in 1999, is een tegenkandidaat erin geslaagd om een zittend president te verslaan. Voor veel Nigerianen zal de uitslag voelen als een overwinning voor de democratie. Aanhangers van Buhari gingen dinsdagavond dan ook massaal de straat op om de overwinning te vieren.

Debat: de toekomst van de eurozone

Op zaterdagmiddag 11 april organiseert de PvdA landelijke werkgroep Europa in samenwerking met de PvdA Eurodelegatie een groot debat over de toekomst van de eurozone. De bijeenkomst vindt plaats in het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam, waar na afloop de mogelijkheid wordt geboden om het museum te bezichtigen.
