Azerbaijani opposition nominates Presidential candidate

On July 2nd, it was announced that Azerbaijan’s opposition groups have united to nominate a single candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections in October. At a session of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) Rustam Ibragimbekov was chosen to represent the opposition in the presidential race. If elected, the candidate will stay in office for only two years.
During that period, the NCDF would establish a ‘government of national trust’, to implement constitutional and electoral reforms, including a decrease of the power of the President, widening of the responsibilities of the Parliament, and establishing an independent judiciary system.

Morsi: 'Our hands are extended'

On June 26 the Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi warned in a widely broadcasted speech that polarization was threatening the country’s democratic process. He also acknowledged he had made some ‘mistakes’, and offered opponents a say in amending the new constitution. The speech comes days before the planned massive demonstration on June 30, the day will mark a year since Morsi won the Presidential elections.

Lebanese army clashes with followers of radical Sunni clerk

On June 25, Lebanese security officials say a roadside bomb has exploded on the highway linking Beirut with Damascus. The bomb comes a day after heavy fighting between the army and militia’s of the radical Sunni clerk Ahmed al-Assir in the northern coastal town Sidon. Each side accuses the other of provoking the initial fighting. According to security forces 16 soldiers died in the fighting and at least 20 supporters of Assir were killed. Dozens are said to have been arrested. The fate of Assir is still unknown.

First Future Leaders Training held in the MENA region

Between June 7th and June 9th the European Forum, in cooperation with the Alfred Mozer Stichting, the UK Labour Party and the Al-Sindyan Institute organized for the first time a Future Leaders Training for 24 young and promising participants from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in Amman, Jordan. The participants came from social democratic and left progressive parties from Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan.

Dit citaat haalt Hans Beerends aan in zijn boekpresentatie van ‘Tegen de draad in’. Het omschrijft wat de Evert Vermeer Stichting (EVS) heeft proberen te doen met de eerste editie van het Solidariteitsdebat en tevens het laatste EVS debat* dat het op vrijdagmiddag 14 juni organiseerde in samenwerking met het Kosmopolis Institute van de Universiteit voor Humanistiek (UvH). Het was een intensieve mooie middag vol reflectie, waaraan alle aanwezigen op een geconcentreerde en enthousiaste manier aan hebben bijgedragen.
